Impending Altercation with Martin Salter
Arron Fitzgerald, 07 Oct 2006 02:27:31
Dear All
I'm going to visit Salt of the Earth during his surgery on Friday or Saturday next week. Although I have been planning to do this for some time, now that the government has announced they intend to introduce the legislation into Parliament (and that Salter lied on Radio 5 on the day of the announcement), I feel I have to confront him on the issue.
I know that I have previously stated that I believe Salter is a lost cause (having too great an personal and political investment in the Longhurst campaign), I'm going to challenge him personally in his constituency office because I don't think anyone else will do so, and that he may well have been personally insulated thus far from the opposing campaign.
I have no doubt that the exchange will degenerate into an fierce argument - Salter is clearly an bigoted, uneducated, narrow-mined cretin. I intend to lead by asking him why he lied on national radio, and why he continues to mislead the public on the issue of Graham Coutts' murder conviction and the evidence supporting the alleged link between crime and the production and consumption of pornography.
I will also ask him why he believes a film like 'Hostel', which features the most graphic and realistic scenes of torture ever produced, should remain legal (with a mere '18' certificate), but a similar film which is deemed to be 'pornographic' (not that any 'violent' pornography is anywhere near as graphic and realistic as Hostel) will attract a prison sentence of three years just for viewing it. How can this not be thought crime and de facto criminalisation of a sexual orientation?
Any advise on the conduct of this meeting will be gratefully received.

Maybe ask him about his evidence on his Radio 5 harangue about the people killed and tortured on camera for entertainment. Ask if he has reported this to the authorities in the countries he cited. I would be especially interested to know if he has reported to the State police in Florida with his "evidence".

"Gobshite" is the most accurate description I can think of for Salter. As your MP, he should be willing to listen to your concerns, even if he does have too much of his own opportunistic interests riding on it.
There were some folks on here in contact with the "Necrobabes" site, which according to Salter features people from Guatemala being killed on camera. I don't know what feedback we got from the site, but this is obvious bunkum and I hope you can help to disabuse Salter of some of these myths.

Note that in his list of past employment he served as a binman. Perhaps he
has abandoned his true vocation.

I would kep things low-key at first (hitting him with the more dramatic statements and questions after his initial weaseling period). Ask him why he said what he did on Radio Five. He may have been wrong (ignorant) rather than deliberately lying, in which case of course you can demand that he make another public statement correcting himself. If he's lying then that's when you can let rip. Ask (politely at first) what evidence he has that makes him so sure that locking up we pervs will make society so much safer. As he weasels it'll be easy to knock his arguments down - there is no evidence in existence so he can' produce any, especially for the 'snuff' movies (the FBI tends to be somewhat more professional with its facts than your average MP).
Commenting on his drive for publicity may get an interesting reaction - it could be a major factor in why he's doing this. Arguing that he's merely exploiting Mrs Longhurst's grief for personal and profesional gain will at the very least thrown him off-balance.
Resources will be the key argument - how will this be policed and enforced? What hospital wards will be closed to pay for extra staff to scrutinise computers and subsidise juries? Which thieves and thugs will be released from prison to accomodate the new thought criminals? Will Parliament sacrifice a few of the armed coppers outside Westminster to kick down some front doors in Tunbridge Wells where dangerous villains are daring to look at naughty pictures of themselves? How much will it cost to force ISPs to install censorship software to stop these hideous images from crossing the channel from continental Europe? Maybe we could get some cheap kit from China or North Korea, those bastions of free speech...
Is it a requirement that you see him alone? Another witness - ideally a relatively-neutral person such as someone from Liberty or Amnesty - would help in corroborating your report on what he says in the meeting (if alone, ensure that you take careful notes - we can't afford to be misquoted and give him any wriggle-room).
Apologies if the above is blindingly obvious or even patronising, but this is a great opportunity and I really, really want to see him squirm! Best of luck Arron - give him hell!

Arron,
Do you have an appointment to see him? Is he your MP? And does he know what you intend to discuss?
Answers to the above may well determine how long you get to speak to him and how successful you might be in engaging him in discussion - you need to prepare accordingly. Regardless of the time you have I think what you are doing is worth while. Mr S needs to be brought into contact with his opponents as this may well focus his mind on exactly what he is doing and forcibly remind him that the proposals will not be accepted in the same way as the child porn restrictions were.
I would not under estimate him, he’s probably quite knowledgeable in *some* aspects of this affair and as an MP is likely to be good in an argument/discussion.
My advice would be do lots of preparation and keep calm! You don’t want to go in all guns blazing and be out again after two minutes. It might well get to that point later but do try to stay as long as possible and make all of the points you need to. He needs to feel very uncomfortable after the meeting.
Be clear which points you want to get across and which questions you want to ask him, if he avoids questions then make sure you repeat them to him. Try to ask the most awkward questions possible such as why is it necessary to give the BBFC immunity if only material in breach of the OPA would be prosecuted.
Try to anticipate what line he might take to some of your questions and be prepared with counter arguments.
It might be worth reading a bit about him - know your enemy: http://www.martinsalter.com/aboutmartin.htm
I see he’s also running a clean up the internet campaign: http://www.martinsalter.com/campaignform.asp

You could also say that this new legislation and all of the misery that it will bring would be the most horrific tribute imaginable.
Best of luck and give him hell!
