“In the comfort of your own home”

Who could imagine that soon you could commit a crime in the comfort of your
own home?
Man/woman switches on TV, camera pans towards screen – newsflash appears and
newsreader takes over the whole picture
**** Newsflash ****
Newsreader:
Crime:
It's everywhere.
(blast screen with stats and headlines about spiralling crime)
Our prisons are packed because crime infests our cities, and our streets.
The Home Office, under the New Labour government, has presided over this
mess for 10 years.
Their solution?
(big question mark)
Deal with the criminals already in our midst? The logical solution,
perhaps...
But No (big "No"). The Home Office instead intends to create a new category
of criminal
Criminals who don´t steal your property; they don’t hurt nor harm your
person; they don’t commit murder.
The
Thought Criminal
(picture of a man with a thought bubble)
Imagining crimes so abhorrent that they need locking up. For real.
***** PORN *****
Looking at porn may soon be sending people to our crowded jail cells.
Our prisons may soon burst with this new breed of criminals.
(statistic of how much a prison cell costs every year)
Because the truth is that just looking at
Pictures
may incriminate you without You even leaving your front door. You too can
soon become a criminal in the comfort of your own home:
· A search of your hard-drive
· your web-browser
· your DVD collection
could be enough to lock you in jail for up to three years.
The government will shortly have a new excuse to invade and expose your
private life whenever they deem necessary.
They think that you may put society at risk just by watching images of
violent sexual content that may look realistic enough to deprave you.
Courts won’t be concerned about how the image was created. Photographs of
staged but realistic acts of violence in a sexual context will incriminate
you under this law. It’s the idea of violence, not actual violence that
matters.
Why?
Because the government thinks you are not mature enough to be exposed to
this kind of material without you being compelled to imitate it in real
life.
According to them, we are all potential criminals: rapists, torturers and
murderers without a conscience.
Thought crime: three years in prison for looking at a picture.
End of Newsflash

Show Backlash URL for the duration of the scene:
Camera pans out from TV, and back to front room:
The man/woman watching the newsflash gets up of sofa. He/she walks to dvd
collection and starts browsing them, stopping to examine some of them.
Suddenly, we hear a vigorous knock at the door, twice* we see hands of the
person reaching to. The man/woman jumps and drops dvd’s.
End

It looks good in a lot of ways BUT the thing about "in the comfort of your
own home" is a bit iffy, given that a lot of genuine crimes are committed
in one's own home, be it storing stolen goods or murder (most murders being
domestic incidents).
Perhaps "committing a crime in your own mind" might work better.

Draft script looks really good to me - punchy and powerful.
Perhaps 'privacy of your own mind' [or 'home'] might work?
My only query is whether the single he/she watching tv may reinforce the
perception of sleazy, solitary, anti-social perves [who of course deserve
to be banged-up!].
A normal 'boy+girl next door' couple on the sofa might have more impact?
Perhaps with a bit of dialoguespecially when the knock on the door comes 'Help -it's the Thought Police
- i'm so frightened, Janet's[ok, notquite so Rocky Horroresque].
Maybe also weave in a phrase like 'A law whose boundaries are as blurred
as that morning after your very first hangover' [i'm sure there's finer analogies
around!]
Or 'A law against your rights to free expression as draconian as anything
from our favourite dictators'[with pics of that N Korean guy and his cronies]
One other point it would be good to hammer home is the collateral damage
/ unintended consequences aspect- how many more innocent lives will be wrecked etc? [Only a few days ago
I saw a news snippet on yet another 'child porn suspect' found hanged.]But this would completely destroy the thread of the script - perhaps keep
it for a sequel if this one goes down well?

Hi Zak,
thanks for the suggestion. When we decided to use "in the comfort of your
own home2 it wasn't because crimes are not committed there. In fact, we were
interested in the sense of false security that "in your home" conjures up in
everybody's mind. The fact that many crimes are actually committed in the
home is exactly the point: for some people, it's safe to commit crimes
there. Fior others, what you do in your pivate life is not a crime, perhaps
because we sometimes believe that there is no crime unless you are found
out. This proposed law would give the police power to search people's houses
with the sole purpose of incriminating them. It would make any household
suspicious.
And don't forget that we can add/change/clarufy things either on paper, or
during post-production, so please don't hesitate to emial me your
suggestions.

Sorry it's taken a little while to reply, but here's some comments.
Overall I think it's excellent, it's not confrontational or aggressive,
it gets the points over well and makes our side clear.
Some observations:
> \x{201C}In the comfort of your own home\x{201D}
>

I think this would be better with "Mr and Mrs Joe Public" whose lives
are about to be torn apart because Mr Public likes looking at "extreme
porn" because IMO we need to get away from the "sad loner wanker in
front of his computer" image.
> The Thought Criminal
>
> (picture of a man with a thought bubble)
I think this point could be made with the "Big Brother is Watching You"
poster if we can get to use it, to emphasise the "thought crime" aspect
and the fact that some people (ie the Tories) are suggesting that ISPs
monitor all net traffic.

What might be nice is, instead of a DVD, to have them sit at a computer
and have the screen display the text eg from the first paragraph of the
Necrobabes site ie:
"These sites deal with very politically incorrect fantasies. If you do
not have these sorts of fantasies, you will likely find them shocking,
if not offensive -- our sites are not for you, please *go away*.
Followed by: "I am an adult. Let me in."
IMO this makes the point that the sites where this material comes from
are not ones that people happen across accidentally and you are suddenly
presented with it "without warning", you have to make a conscious
decision to access them.
Apart from that, it's a really great piece of work and I look forward to
seeing the finished result.
Cheers,
Graham.

I do see what you mean and, for the majority of people, the "in your own
home" would
resonate - you're supposed to be safe in your own home. I'm probably
over-complicating
things.

Then maybe a more appropriate phrase might be:
In the "safety" of your own home.
budgie (just woken up, probably not making much sense)
