I have set up a matrix of MPs and plan to try for a named individual to be a Backlash representative for each one. Ideally, that person will act as a central point for individuals to send copies of correspondence to/from MPs. When I find a good place to put the matrix - I'll put it on the net and people can then be directed there for information
Please write to lobbying@backlash-uk.org.uk or post here to say if you are willing to
#1 be on to a mailing list for information about what Backlash suggest you can do about contacting MPs
#2 be a central point for information in your local MP's constituency
#3 keep hard and soft-copy backups of correspondence to/from your own local MP (until we can find a good place and method to store it all)
#4 direct people to www.theyworkforyou.com on your various profile/s and sites & encourage people write to their own MPs and, initially, ask how they plan to vote
EXAMPLE FIRST CONTACT with an MP
1 tell them you are one of their constituents : anonymous doesn't work well
2 ask what their view is on the proposed new law to criminalise simple possession of "extreme pornography" http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/cons-extreme-porn-3008051/
- ask if they think there is a need for it
- ask them if they plan to vote for or against it : and why.
- Tell them you don't think there is any need for a new law.
- Tell them why if you like
EXAMPLE FIRST CONTACT with the Home Office
1 tell them who you are, even a yahoo/hotmail email is valid
2 tell them you are/not willing to have your details made public
3 ask them why their response was to go ahead with this proposal when the majority of responses were against it: quote the numbers from http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/cons-extreme-porn-3008051/
Keep copies of emails and letters, let Backlash know you have them
If enough people remind the Home Office and Members of Parliament that this is a democracy, and that voters are asking questions about what they are doing and why, we may get a government that won't make it illegal to be an individual.
