Speaker/expo for Moonbow festival??
«No Name Set», 14 Sep 2005 23:39:41
Next month in London will be the Festival of the International
Lesbian and Gay Cultural Organisation.
The main theme of the festival is around Byelarus, where LGBTs
are facing horrendous government oppression. [In fact, the
original idea was a rainbow festival in Byelarus, but this was
going to be impossible, so there will be three "Moonbow in
Exile" festivals in various cities over the year.] There will
be various Byelarus-themed events, also more general events
feature visual arts, poetry/drama/readings, music, etc - also
general forum sessions for news, issues and the like, and a
"cabaret night" where all participants are invited to present
something.
Could we have a speaker, and/or (a part of) the planned
exhibition there??
I know it's short notice, but I know the organisers....
Clearly, given the event, it ought to be an LGB or T speaker,
and LGBT-related exhibits (and by "L" and do mean "by dykes for
dykes" not what straight men buy of pairs of women performing
for their delectation!!).
And it would have to start from a cultural viewpoint - say the
possible implications for artists originating LGBT cultural
works, given the difficulties of defining what would be OK an
dwhat banned, and the historical tendency of laws against porn
to be applied far more strenuously against gay material than
straight.
It would also have to be very strictly legal - as the organisers
are expecting the Byelarussion secret police to be interested in
the festival (and ours may be too, keeping an eye of the
Byelarussians).
Any volunteers?
I can't do it myself, sorry - not only am I a pretty
un-inspirational speaker even when not called upon to be
gentlemanly, but I can't go somewhere there may be flash bulbs.

For this wouldnt it be better to have a few people... possibly one from each
of the groups L/g/b/t
Showing that this proposal more or less affects everyone... some in small
ways some in large ways

Well, several would be nice, but that does depend on there being
people willing to volunteer. Anyone...?
I was talking to one of the organisers yesterday. He sounded
interested to hear about the situation, and is sure there'll be
enough flexibility in the programme to be able to fit it in, if
someone(s) can make themself/ves known to him at the festival.
The festival is 7,8,9 of October, main events happening 11am-3pm
in the Soho Community Safety Office, 24 Peter St, W1, with other
activities in various parts of London later on the three days
(including an outing to Club Wotever). [everyone's invited to
go along and see/hear/etc even if you don't want to speak - all
events free bar the club nights.]
