Meeting with Menzies Campbell 11/9/6

Sue, 11 Sep 2006 14:15:33

Just back from meeting with Menzies Campbell. Unfortunately I could not get him to commit to saying there and then that he would be opposing the bill as he feels that he needs to see the legislation in its full state.

However, his personal feelings at this time is that the government should be staying out of our bedrooms and should be taking the issue of consent on board.

He was not aware of Backlash, but is now lol. I left the briefing document with him to peruse.

Sorry I did not bring home a more absolute response.

Good work. Sir Menzies ambiguous attitude seems to contrast with the whoop of joy and "should have done it ages ago" response from the Lib. spokeswoman on 30 August. One wonders if they tell people what they want to hear sometimes, rather than what they really think.
Have you anything lined up with David Cameron. I'm trying to arrange a meeting.

Nice work! There may well be some concerned MPs who feel reluctant to speak out about this; if someone of Campbell's high-profile could be persuaded to actively scrutinise the legislation, this could only be a very positive development.

Menzies Campbell's views on pornography in general seem to have been formulated by his time prior to politics when he was working as an advocate. He spent time viewing it, wasn't his cup of tea but saw no good reason as to why it was such a big issue.

Don't apologise, this is still excellent news! This can now be mentioned
in letters to other MPs and gives it a lot more weight.

Well done :-)

Cheers,
Graham.

He's a politician.

I'd say that this is as close to a firm commitment as he was ever likely to give.

I think this is a very strong result.

Was he completely sober at the time or had he just drunk two (or more)
glasses of tepid water?

Interesting you should mention that, as Charlie K had some quite reasonable things to say on the matter of pornography when this wretched consultation first surfaced (not sure if it is posted on here somewhere or not). I am considering writing to him again, as a high profile figure who would be good to have onside.
