Lobbying: The Party Conferences
Manniq, 14 Sep 2005 17:29:26
Conference Season is upon us. The three main conferences will take place as follows:
Lib Dem: Blackpool, 18 - 22 September
Labour: Brighton, 25 - 29 September
Conservative: Blackpool, 3 - 6 October
Things to do at conferences: arrange to meet MP's, hand out leaflets, attend fringe meetings - get invited to speak at Fringe meetings!!!
As with most such events, there is an Official Fringe and an Unofficial Fringe. In terms of Official Fringe, the only thing at the Lib Dem Conference likely to be of use to us is a meeting sponsored by Citizen's Advice on Sunday evening on 'Policing Prejudice: How do we tackle hate crime?'
Some thoughts and random actions:
I need to get hold of/see an agenda for the Conservative Conference. Their organisation is based in central London and anyone can nip in and thumb through the Conference agenda. Anyone prepared to volunteer? (The alternative is paying £8 just to get hold of a single copy).
If you are in/around Blackpool in the next week, or have any clout with the Lib Dems, the person to get to see is either Mark Oaten, MP (their shadow Home Sec) or Lord Navnit Dholakia, on their Home Affairs Panel. I will be attempting to see these people officially later - but so long as you don't claim to be representing anyone you are not, there is no harm whatsoever in going up to these people and saying 'Oi! What do you think of the latest Home Office consultation paper'. But politely.
Finally, if you are in/around Blackpool and up to it, I could possibly find a way to get a short unofficial Fringe meeting set up. Let me know if you are interested and whether you could handle such a thing.
Otherwise, more info to follow shortly.
Regards,
M

I'm sure that the respective party gay groups (errm, LGBT
groups) will be having get-togethers at the conferences,
officially or unofficially. I'm also sure there will be at
least some leather guys among the ranks of each, however
prominent or well-supported they are.
I'll try and find addresses for them, and dig up any contacts in
each I can. FOr anyone who wants to try google, and if the
Spaaner folks haven't been there, done that, try
DELGA - Democrats for Lesbian and Gay Action (?)
LCLGR = Labour Campaign for Lesbian and Gay Rights
TORCHE = Tory Campaign for Homosexual Equality (I think they
have of had a British Monomark box, BM TORCHE, but ill try to
confirm)

With the Labour Party Conference is on at the moment (it's been a complete nightmare trying to drive through the centre of town this week!) Does anyone know if anything is being done by any groups locally? Just wondering as we only have two days left if no one is doing anything and anyone's interested in trying to make sure people are better informed on the situation...
