The Psychologist, July 2006
Nigel Meek, 30 Jun 2006 09:04:15
My letter went in! I've posted the relevant couple of pages to the Files section. There's an interesting accompnying letter which essentially asks, "Who's this "we" business?"

This looks like a really interesting debate developing in the pages of The Psychologist, I think we could do with being kept abreast of further developments.
The letter from Barbara Krahé needs to be challenged. I assume that the criticisms of research into the field that the Williams Report made would still hold true for later studies? Also, looking back to the May letters, there is reference to the "extensive literature" finding no simple causal links - which apparently Krahé has also ignored in selecting her material.

An "interesting" letter only in that it clearly picks and chooses what
parts of research it wants to highlight in order to try to back-up
their being pro-legislation.
Donnerstein (1982) and Malmouth and Donnerstein (1982, 1984) both
clearly showed pornography (defined as "a particular type of erotic
material in which sexual and aggressive elemenrs tombine to portray
force and sexual coercian being used to accomplish a sexual act") must
include anger in order for it to have an effect on aggression.
Doctor Krahe's assertion that there are "reliable associations between
frequent pornography use and sexually aggressive behaviours" is little
more than spin.

Don't bother with Donnerstein and co, all their studies are bollocks and
have been discredited. It's not possible to prove any kind of causal link
between any kind of pornography and agressive behaviour - because such a
link doesn't exist.

Amelie, Nigel's letter etc is in the files section in the Backlash
Smartgroup, not the website.
Amelie, 04 Jul 2006 17:08:22
not sure why, but can't find anything later than March 2006, which is why I
thought they must be elsewhere - what folder are Nigel's files in?

It is on page 2, not in a subfolder, previous corresp links above it.

I would second that vote of thanks!
Also, I was wondering if Backlash has permission yet to publish the "alternative" BPS response to the consultation as this doesn't seem to appear on the site currently?
My further research into the original culprits behind the BPS response has revealed that Dr Carol Ireland apparently works for Ashworth NHS trust (nr Liverpool, if my geography serves me right) and Fiona Wilks-Riley was a research student at the Uni of Central Lancashire, whose thesis was related to "psychopathy".
