Meeting with Martin Salter MP

Arron Fitzgerald, 22 Jun 2006 08:31:33

Dear All,

Following the recent revelation that Mrs Longhurst still has the strong support of my local MP Martin 'Salt of the Earth' Salter, I am going to press for a meeting with him to discuss the issue.

While I'm confident that I have all the arguments at my disposal to demolish the case made for the VP proposals, any advice that the group could give me would be grately appreciated.

Yes I did, as I said I already have all the arguments at my disposal to
destroy the case for the new law.

My request for any further advice was in respect of conducting the meeting,
and from anyone who has relevant experience.

Arron

I would ask questions, arather than go in fighting.

Make them really innocuous ones.

like: I got an email from Bizarre magazine and there was a link to a site. If I clicked on it could I be arrested?

Rabinder Singh says that If I buy a porn fil, I might be arrested?

what about if I take a photo of myself and my partner, how will I be able to prove it was ok?

be scared.

That was the thing that has sparked the most interest from officials I have spoken to.

ask how long till tis becomes law? will you have time to clean yur files of anything you think might be risky..

since images exist forever will you need to buy a new computer?

Re cleaning your computer. By Evidence Eliminator. Google it. It cost a bit but it cleans you whole HD of everything unwanted. Overwrites every bit of empty space removes all traces of internet activity. Its the one programme really feared by the cops. My excuse for using it is. I do internet banking and I need to remove all traces of my doings M'Lud

Or perhaps "I surf for legal porn and am very concerned that pressing the wrong key could land me in prison under the new draconian porno persecution laws so using the precautionary principle I clean my hard disk every day."

I would recomend doing some research on him first, looking at his website it says he is: "a genial laddish, approachable
MP who is popular and hard working; loyal but no robot." Politicos guide to the 2001 General Election

"a sharp, clever, labour backbencher"
– The Guardian Guide to the 2001 General Election

There might be something that would give you a clue, a weakness or a talking point.

Always be polite, don't get too wound up and don't expect too much. You will not be able to convince him, but you might be able to make him think a little and to introduce a few doubts in his mind.

I still think the best angle is the issue of prosecuting consentual adult sexual images (realistic depictions) for the purpose of making it easier to prosecute actual images, I would tell him that this is a *moraly* abhorrent concept and that it is not acceptable to sacrifice some innocent people so that the guilty can be prosecuted. When you bring this up he will mention that realistic depictions are already illegal in child porn - at which point you can make a play on the issue of consent and also in the proportions of content in each case (fantasy v real images). It will also alow you to highlight that the law is so vague that many will not be able to tell where the boundary is and that this is already an issue with "child porn" and 18 year olds. Have a few examples of serious miscarrages of justice that have already occured in the relitively clear cut circumstance of defining children (see http://www.inquisition21.com/)

Don't imagine he is well informed about BDSM activities or the number of people who engage in it (although he might be).

Make sure he is in no doubt that there is a substantial movement against this legislation and that it will be fought tooth and nail all the way to the ECHR if it becomes law.

Bit of a tall order but if you could arrange for him to attend one of these "munches" that might provide an interesting oportunity.
