So jailing harmless citizens is a fitting tribute is it?
I wonder if some point of law could be made of this obvious bias and predudice?

Agreed...yet another cosy meeting with the minister. When are those who oppose this proposal going to get a hearing?

when there is a large constituency of voters opposed to the proposals, not just a few hundred people who took part ion a consulation.
We need to step up the pressure.
Is anyone going to write to their MP about this? write to their local paper, write to the Reading Evening Post? go to Conference? advertise the facts on yahoo groups and other places on the net? write an article for magazines

I left a comment on the Reading Post site, but (surprise, surprise) it wasn't uploaded to the article thread...
T.
got to be justification for calling the editor...

I also left a comment on the site but it also seems to have disappeared.
I will be doing an interview next week for a local newspaper.

I have written to the editors; let's see if they care enough to respond...
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Sirs,
As somebody who supports the "Backlash" campaign against the proposed criminalisation of certain adult pornography, I yesterday submitted a comment to the Reading Evening Post website regarding your article of 21/06/06, "Mother continues fight on sick porn". Unfortunately, it seems as though my comment was not uploaded to the site and, I am told by colleagues that their attempts to post comments were similarly unsuccessful.
It is simply not the case that these extremely authoritarian proposed measures have overwhelming public support. For examples of cogent and reasoned anti-legislation arguments -

I am very disappointed that no space on the issue is apparently being afforded to opinions other than those of a censorial persuasion in your newspaper; in fact, the tone and emphasis of your reporting is frankly rather bias and tendentious. I hope you will help promote a more balanced and informed debate on this very important societal issue in the future.
Yours Faithfully,

Following my complaint to the editors, the submitted comments have suddenly appeared on this site! Apparently, they do not actively censor their message boards...

Here's a further report of the same story.

Apparently, Salter thinks the government consultation paper was "excellent"...I wonder if he has also bothered to read any of the excellent responses?

Is there any compelling evidence that idiot can actually read anything
more challenging that the "Janet and John" stories or "Noddy goes to
Toytown"?

I'll write a note to the site, which is apparently a news-site for Berkshire MPs. I doubt I will get any reply or acknowledgment, but there you go! I would agree that Salter is a self-serving imbecile....

I sent my response to this article to beks Mps and salter himself
Now where else shall i copy it too? My MP I think
Hello
<
I deeply sympathise with Mrs Longhurst regarding the disgusting murder of her Daughter but hard cases make bad law and this emotionally charged case may result in the persecution of hundreds and maybe thousands of law abiding citizens because the Home office seek a sensational headline or two. I am convinced also that the HO sense a chance to get revenge for their loss of grip on main stream pornography by nailing some soft target ie "pervs" who enjoy sexual practices or fantasies they disapprove of. It is obvious that they are not just after the strangling murder rape stuff Coutts was into but almost every aspect of BDSM and erotic horror role play and that amounts to nothing less than the persecution of sexual minorities. It used to be gay people and now its going to be BDSMs and others
It is neither right nor just to make a draconian law on the back of one random crime.
I challenge you to publish this email rather than censor it for being off message or otherwise unpalatable
Yours Sincerely
Alan Slaughter>>

My submission to the site...
-----------------------------------------------------------
As much as one sympathises with Mrs Longhurst, it is wrong for such draconian legislation to be formulated by the wishes of victims in this way; the subtext seems to be that many people, whose only crime is to have unusual interests, may have to suffer persecution as sex criminals to vindicate her position. The public responses to the "consultative process" this article refers to were, in fact, largely opposed to the proposed new laws, but the government seems arrogantly and foolishly willing to press on regardless of this lack of community support.

This comparison between "violent" porn and child pornography is neither legally nor morally correct; this is material involing adults, most of it originating out of fictional and/or consensual situations (do the supporters of these proposals have ANY evidence to the contrary?). That Mr Salter can refer to the HO's tendentious and subjective consultation paper as being "excellent" beggers belief. I want to live in a liberal and tolerate society and this campaign and the proposed legislation are anything but.
