IWF

Hi All,

I've had a surprisingly friendly and sincere exchange of e-mails with people from the Internet Watch Foundation regarding the EP proposals. Whilst they don't seem to have that much positive enthusiasm for the legislation, they are VERY pessimistic about our prospects of stopping this (don't forget, the IWF have been afforded meetings with HO officials). We'll see what emerges in due course...

They may be right, but a lot of water has gone under the bridge since last year and I believe we may still have a chance to defeat this legislation.

Failing that there will be a number of opportunities for the legislation to be amended as it progresses through Parliament and it may be possible to remove some of the worst aspects in a damage limitation exercise.

If/when it does become law it will be important to challenge it in the courts in the UK and then in Europe. This might provide another route for defeating this legislation - although at some cost both human and financial.

Finally there are ways of protecting systems from external investigation, ways of permanently removing files and histories so that they can never be retrieved and a variety of techniques, some obvious and some devious, to secure data that would make enforcement very difficult if not impossible. Given the vague nature of the proposals this would help protect everyone as anyone could become a victim of this legislation.

If the legislation is passed I hope that most people here will stay with us for the long haul, helping to raise funds, taking this through the UK courts, the European courts and trying to ensure that prosecutions are drawn out and costly affairs for the Government that often lead to acquittals.

DOn't forget that they are a bunch of self-righteous, self-important
wankers with no professional qualifications whatsoever.. The IWF is an
organisation comprised of unelected bucketheads who speak for no one but
themselves, make great pronouncements with no backup about other people's
possible behaviour, and who should be pursued and mocked on every
pissibole occasion.

On behalf of bucket-makers everywhere, I wish to protest about that
description of the IWF.

Even a poorly made bucket can have a useful purpose, perhaps as a garden
planter. On the other hand, the IWF seems to have no useful purpose
whatever and they only add to the CO2 and/or methane output of the UK.
