Contacts database
SnowdropExplodes, 04 May 2006 22:08:04
Right, I'm willing to have a crack at making some sort of central record of who's been contacted, by whom, when, etc.
I would say that a database is the best way to go, but the only database application I have available is AppleWorks 6, which I'm guessing won't be compatible with most people's software - I can certainly but most of the details into an Excel spreadsheet (e.g. dates of correspondence, type of response, etc) but some of the detail may be lost, e.g. if several people have written to the same MP, a database could easily be used to store their names, but a spreadsheet would probably not be suitable for that purpose.
If someone else wants to combine the Excel spreadsheet with the further details, I could conceivably prepare a Word document to fill in the blanks, and all that person would have to do was transfer the data into the appropriate fields in a database. Alternatively, the two documents could be posted separately and people use their own native intelligence to work from each of them.
I'd appreciate the following, please email me at miha83@dsl.pipex.com:
1/. Advice whether to use AppleWorks or Excel
2/. Details regarding all correspondence with MPs, organisations, etc - especially:
a) dates of letters sent, and dates of replies (if received)
b) any connection with correspondent (e.g. sender's constituency MP, sender is member of the organisation, etc)
c) whether sent as a representative of backlash or as "a concerned individual"
d) what position the correspondent holds (e.g. for an MP, which consituency they represent, and if they have any ministerial role in their party; or what post in the organisation they hold)
e) how the communication was set (e.g. email, snail mail, face-to-face meeting)
I'd like these as quickly as possible, please!
Remember, please do NOT send to "snowdrop-explodes@talk21.com"
Instead, please send to "miha83@dsl.pipex.com". It isn't vitally important, but it will make my life easier.

I get very few replies; whether this is disagreement or apathy is a moot point in many cases. Indeed, the general media is silent on the subject and the various forums and polls (e.g. Ch4 following the "Animal Farm" documentary) are consistently showing public opinion as being against the new laws; if only all these folks had replied to the consultation!
Thats great...some points though...
I had no idea. I think this needs to be co-ordinated. what are you writing? to whom? on behalf of yourself? Can you publish links?
I said elsewhere we need a matrix of who is being contacted and what they are saying. To do that, we need to know what people are doing. We also need more people to get involved.
Are you refering people to backlash where you have these discussions?

I'll try and track back and see what I've got.
I'll also put up an appeal on soem of the chatrooms...
Is it ok to publish that contact address there?

The contact address is chosen to be one that I have no problem with seeing widely distributed. Although it is on my main email account, it is not my main email address, and "miha83" is a random designation generated by the system when I asked to set up a new address, so it gives no clues as to my r/l identity. In theory I suppose it could be traced back to me via the ISP but it's sufficiently anonymous that I don't mind it being widely distributed.

I'm a bit bothered that so far, only Amelie has contacted me with any information about letters to MPs etc that I can put in the spreadsheet/database of people's contacts.
The address to use is:
miha83@dsl.pipex.com
Please include as much information as possible about your correspondence.

The details of my correspondence with my MP, Mike Hancock, Lib Dem,

I can send them to you again if you want.
