First message of April
Teddy, 01 Apr 2006 03:20:27
Hi All,
As there are concerns about the falling number of posts, I thought I'd chip in with a new thread for a new month! I must say I've never found anyone on here anything but friendly and tolerant. Not all the posts are immediately going to solve the issues we face, but nobody has tried to sell me viagra either; and it's relatively easy to adjust personal settings so as not to get a clogged up inbox.
That said, April might be a critical month, with the consultation response summary due and the meeting of BDSM representatives with the HO imminent. I have a certain feeling that HM government might just "bottle-it" this time; one wonders if this really forms part of the core of governmental policy and I'll bet the level of opposition has taken them by surprise. Anything around 50% opposition in a public consultation to a proposal they had hoped to rubber-stamp into law is a serious matter.
I might be wrong, of course, and I also fear that this meeting with BDSM groups might be used as some kind of cover along the lines of "we consulted various stake-holders before formulating our policy on this"; they need to be told in no uncertain terms about how unacceptable these proposals are to a significant section of "our society", as they might patronisingly call us!
Maybe some folks from Spanner et al might think differently, but I don't see where grounds for compromise exist; maybe "BDSM people can continue to view their "aberrant" porn, but psychopathically inclined MEN (don't all put your hands up at once!) can all go to prison for 3 years if they view it"...this would strike me as unworkable!
Best Wishes to all,
Teddy

I must admit I have been lurking here somewhat. Thanks for the positive message Teddy, I certainly hope your feeling is justified and I hope they do indeed bottle it on this one, as the alternative is unthinkable, unworkable, unjust - there are probably any number of "uns" that it might be described as, but we all know that.
Sorry if this has been posted up before, but I found it on the net, and it's one of the best responses to the consultation I've seen (This is worth reading every time you are dispirited after reading the horrific responses in favour of these discriminatory and dangerous proposals....) It is the kind of considered, intelligent and persausive response that would be taken notice of, if indeed the consulation is not merely a paper exercise.

If links to backlash from my various sites and pointing out the existence of this group on my adult blogs is any use, I am certainly happy to help out however I can.

Hi Rob
Maybe many of us have been lurking waiting for the Home Office's proposed
legislation rather
than having lost interest.
However I am responding to your post because your praise and recommendation
of the above site though excellent, hardly does justice to the genius who
unpicks the totally flawed
Consultation Document point by point.
Hope other members will take a look and consider if those are the best
arguements to send to our MP's if draft legislation is forthcoming.
Obviously it is not justice if we all have to suffer for the crime of a
psychopath who had informed an old girlfriend of his desire to rape and and
strangle a woman before he had a
computer. It is also likely that he had that fantasy before he viewed any
of the images which
the HO want to make illegal. Therefor if the proposed legislation had been
in force at the time it would not have prevented the mindless crime.
That star consultation response also mentions that Graham Coutts was not
known to be a member of a BDSM group and so his actions should not be used to
penalise us who have principles and are consensual.
Best regards.

I agree that, amongst some very good responses we have had, the "Uncharted Worlds" is a particularly excellent one.
Also pleasing that such an intelligent and erudite lady should be the author; I have just read the campaign of my local Labour party supporting the legislation and was appalled by apparent attempts to make this into some kind of "womens lib" issue.

These folks should go and do some research, rather than adopt such a sociopathic stance; it will all be so great until somebody in their close family and friends is affected by this legislation.

Hi
Just to let you know that your email came through as above and I wonder why
several from other group members posts have also come blank?

The message on the back of the flyer and some of the arguments Spanner will be using at the Home Office include:
• will criminalise hundreds of thousands (maybe
millions) of harmless people
• will be almost impossible to enforce
• will stretch police resources without improving
public safety
• aren’t necessary
• ignore evidence that the material is harmless
• are an attempt to impose the government’s ‘values’
on your private life
These are also the messages people should be using with their MPs, the media, friends, yahoo groups, msn groups, gothic imagery blogs, art blogs, politics blogs, music blogs now.
Anyone not working to spread the word on why any proposals would be wrong is wasting important time.
please post here anything that you have done so we can keep track and other members can bump your posts etc....

In spite of many weeks of trying and a number of letters sent to councillors, no response or acknowledgement at all from my local Labour party, who make the Longhurst campaign such a feature of their politics. Does anyone else live in the Cambridgeshire area? Further complaints might help knock this lot off their perch of complacency and opportunism?!
