backlash smartgroup technical problems and an update

demolitionred, 21 Feb 2006 10:39:56

The smartgroup has been suffering extrem delays for a few weeks now. Since time is getting on , I have decided to email you alll and update you with recent news and to moot the idea we should have a meeting on either the weeke beginning 27th Feb or the week after.

1) We have redesigned the backlash website and are trying to keep it updated with news as it emerges, We have also been looking at the possibilty of starting a forum for backlash campaign discussions.

2)The Spanner Trust has secured a meeting with the HOme Office to discuss its questions over the way the consulation was processed. It is also hopeful it will be able to secure a further meeting to discuss questions about the substance of the proposals

3)Liberty have written to one of our number conceding that their submission was not as clear as it could have been.
"Our response should have been more clear that that our lack of opposition to criminalisation only relates to any non consensual pornography. That said there are types of non consensual or child pornography that we believe is properly in the domain of the criminal law.
"If the governments proposals proceed to draft legislation then I will ensure that this is made clear." Gareth Crossman, Policy Director, Liberty

4) we are proposing to put forward a motion for the Liberty AGM explaining our position and requestiing that they change theirs. We need two members of LIberty to propose the motion and second it.

5) We have heard that opponents to the proposals include hard hitters like the BBC which should give extra weight to our campaign.

6) We have taken advice from senior advisors on how to procedd with discussions with the Home Office.

There is still lots to do and less and less time to do it in. Could people who would like to attend a meeting to discuss our future lobbying plans, tell me whether they would be available on wed 2nd March.

sorry for the intrusion

Hi All,

Did I read that right...the BBC have opposed the proposals?? This would come as a welcome surprise after all the sensationalist nonsense that has appeared in other sections of the media...

which sensationalist nonsense? the torygraph, FT and Guardian all opposed the proposals...

The Mail on Sunday's superbly crafted and balanced "Shut down the killer websites" campaign in 2004 springs to mind. Admittedly, it was in the raw-anger days after the Coutts trial...The Mirror and Sun also got very much onto the moral soapbox at the time, I recall.

Now I think about it, Nicky Campbell posed Gormless quite a few good questions on R5live on the morning of the consultation release. Good on the Beeb!

is it possible to download the i/view?

The interview was on the morning of the consultation release (30th Aug 2005?) at around 8.30am. I have no idea if the BBC will have archived it!

Nicky Campbell raised points about (1) similarly violent film content, (2) why are "realistic depictions" included? and (3) why would people considered "offenders" be so readily punished rather than helped? Gormless played it all with a very straight bat, bringing out the abhorrence card again.

we will happily be involved in any way we can, Red, but coming to London
from the Island for a meeting will be very difficult unless someone can
offer us accommodation overnight.

As I intimated, I wrote the promised book and have published it at my own
expense.

It will be available from all booksellers in about 2 months but meanwhile is
available from LULU.com (about 10 dollars) as pdf and from me as word
document, free. We hope to market it fairly extensively on the back of any
Government action and are willing to talk to MPs, media , bring copies to
fairs etc. or whatever else is needed to present the sane and acceptable
face of BDSM.
