Liberty's response, latest

Here follows the text of the response I received from Gareth Crossman, Policy Director of Liberty, to the email I sent to Liberty expressing my dismay at their response to the consultation on extreme pornography:

Subject: RE: your response to the govt. consultation on extreme pornography

Dear Mr (my name),

I am extremely sorry for the long delay in replying to your mail.

I have received a number of emails about Liberty's response and would
like to clarify our position. Liberty does not support the
criminalisation of consensual sexual practices or consensual
pornography. Our response should have been more clear that that our lack
of opposition to criminalisation only relates to any non consensual
pornography. That said there are types of non consensual or child
pornography that we believe is properly in the domain of the criminal
law.

If the governments proposals proceed to draft legislation then I will
ensure that this is made clear.

Gareth Crossman
Policy Director
Liberty

I have replied saying that Backlash Campaign Group or its member organisations would welcome information or requests for information from Liberty as Liberty develop their position, provided the current web address of the campaign website and included the main text of the mission statement/manifesto in my email.

Ta,

Hmm...interesting! Was it really just that we all missed the nuances of the Liberty consultation reply, or is this a partial U-turn, perhaps?!

Courtesy of the Spanner Trust I ahve now seen Liberty's response tto the consultation. In many ways it is very similar to our view. It specifically mentions the potential to further criminalise BDSMers....a summary of the submission and conversations between Spanner and Liberty will be uploaded to the backlash site in the next few days.

I just wanted to share with you my excitement that Liberty seem to be largely on side and keen to keep up discussions...

Has anyone made anyt progress with Amnesty and Justice...if they know iberty, Channal 4 and the BBC have challenged the proposals they may be more interested.

I also think this bears more weight when people discuss these matters with their MPs, journalists etc...

Hi Demolition Red,

I know we are on the same side here, but I am confused! The official Liberty consultation response has been publicly available since November and has been the subject of exhaustive debates on this and other forums since then. I see no comparisons between this and the aims of Backlash.

It was an absolutely AWFUL response; apart from some (nonetheless valid) reservations about accidental possession and onus of proof, it seemed to most that they tacitly supported the legislation. The 2nd paragraph, to give just one example, cannot possibly represent the position of Backlash-

"We accept that the Government's proposals, to make the possession of extreme and abhorrent pornography, is reasonable." etc, etc...

In my view, it was in part down to the many letters of complaint that they received from Backlash supporters that we now learn of Liberty's more considered views on the subject. That said, if they are now going to be useful allies in this campaign, that is definitely a positive development!

Cheers,
T.
