Response from Mark Oaten MP

Silver, 06 Dec 2005 10:08:13

Dear All,

I suspect most of you are aware for some weeks now I have slowly been writing to all our MPs.

Below is a reply from Mark Oaten MP for Winchester.

Best wishes,

Silver.

Dear Silver,
Thank you for your recent email regarding the current Government consultation on extreme pornography. The Government is proposing a new offence of possessing violent and abusive pornography, punishable by up to three years in prison.
I support sensible measures which protect children from extreme sites. However, the government must avoid creating a nanny state or introducing laws that can't be enforced. One key issue is that the Government clearly needs to provide a very clear and succinct definition of what constitutes violent and abusive pornography. I will continue to work on this issue when legislation is brought to Parliament now the consultation has closed to make sure any measures are sensible and proportionate.
Thank you for contacting me about this important issue.
Yours sincerely
Mark Oaten MP

Interesting.
Winchester is the home of the Winchester Power Exchange and maybe some
of Mark Oaten's constituents may like to follow this through too.

I also wrote to Mark Oaten and got a similar response. It seem the Lib Dems are not coming out against the legislation yet, but are at least asking a few sane questions on the subject...

IT is Lib Dem policy.

On the day the consulataion was announced they issued a press release (signed by Mark Oaten) calling for government restraint in this matter

The party to be aginst censorship. It is in their manifesto. the manifesto si being reproduced almost word for word in letters back to concerned citizens -- except for from Ming the Merciless.

We shouldn't be concentrating our efforts on people that are already nominatively on ours side.

WE so fra as I know haven't had a single response form a Labour MP -- and they are key.

It was suggested that someone contact Glenda Jackosn. Did this happen? Other Labour MPs were mentioned. Has anyone contacted them?

we have written to every Mainland MP but had no positive responses although
David Wyatt did take up the matter of the extension which did happen.

Really?

December 2005

Possession of Extreme Pornographic material

Publication date: 30/08/05

Closing date for responses: 02/12/05

consultations/2005-cons-closed/>

That doesn't look much like an extension to me.

none-the less, they were still accepting responses a few days later. I did
point out the discrepancies
