some campaign ideas: The Press imperative

Manniq, 06 Nov 2005 11:15:50

Snowdrop,

It seems to me that D-Day next year is going to be the day on which the consultation process reports back. In other words, maybe early February, early March.

Get your head around the news agenda: unless some big story turns up that puts sexual violence back on the agenda, then the closing data for consultation is a damp squib...and no-one is going to say much until the report is out.

Now think back to the day that the Process was launched: wall-to-wall coverage (and lead story on many national broadcast media) plus hours of debate on chat shows across the land.

Debate between those in favour and usually a broadcaster playing devil's advocate. Our chair was empty Everywhere.

By 1 February, every media organisation likely to cover this story needs to know a) that Backlash exists b) that it represents a lot of people c) that we were pretty miffed that we weren't asked to comment last time and d) that next time this issue hits the headlines, the following 50 people (yep, 50 at least, nationwide) are prepared to debate the issue on National, Regional and Local fora.

That is an organisational task and one I am starting to put some effort into. I already possess a database of quite a few press contacts. I am now ratcheting it up, adding loads more.... and between now and 1 February, the following needs to happen.

1. We need to populate that database 100%.

2. We need to write to all people on that list in general terms, telling them about Backlash

3. We need to have the list of spokespeople ready to go on to the news and debate this issue.

Personally, if that happens, that would be the biggest shock imaginable to the bigots in the Goggins camp. The fact that instead of an easy media ride, they would find every previously empty chair filled with someone prepared to say 'bollocks' back to him.

Regards,

M

I once heard an MP say that if one person wrote to him he did not take much
notice, but if thirteen or more wrote to him on the same subject, it was
panic stations!

I'm sure that MP's are fully aware of the real percentage of the full
populations views that thirnteen people writing to them probably represent.

Ooh, guess what? Somebody's organising (or trying
to!) a fundraising/publicity event on 4th March 2006!

I'm entirely with you on this, and I think most of my
postings have demonstrated this; I have to say your
"get your head around..." remark was a little bit
patronising!

(And, your very next post seemed to be supportive of
the mad photo-op idea!)

I agree we need to sort out our media front pretty
soon, and be ready for this.

My own view is to have a broad front, with both
headline-grabbing tabloid fodder like the
caned-bottoms photo-op, and serious faces on the news
programmes and broadsheet interviews.

I'll help organising it, but I don't think I am the
best person to be a spokesperson.

Ta,
