I fear we are going into a new age politically, a reprehensible and regrettable period for our democracy.

What has brought about this seemingly sudden change in our political thinking? Why now, suddenly when there is so much on the government’s agenda politicians are picking on minority groups like the bdsm movement? Why has morality taken on a new dimension that would even shock our Victorian ancestors ?

Personally, I think it is because ‘freedom of speech’ was simply a political tool, just like the MIG 15, it is out of date obsolete. The Russian empire has fallen. The last Bastion of communism China is no more.

Freedom of speech simply isn’t important anymore we don’t need to wave it under the communists nose. We don’t have to convince our troops attacking Russia would be to defend 'freedom of speech.' After all you can’t say boys you’re going off to die to protect big business and the 1% of wealthy individuals.

Freedom of speech was a wonderful tool, which everyone understood and presumed worth dying for. Sorry along with the Berlin Wall ‘freedom of speech’ has gone forever. Long live bigotry and ignorance.

Unless we stand up and say loud and clear to the government ‘freedom of speech’ is what our fathers died for and we want it back. I believe the only way the government will sit up and listen if we threaten them with organised civil disobedience. We have had the 'Cold War,' let's call this one the 'Warm War.'

I would agree but would add another reason why the Government has become jumpy over obscenity. Next year will see the dawning of a new era in broadcasting. By the end of 2006 millions of people across the UK will have the capacity to recieve television broadcasts from other countries via IP broadband. And that will realy upset those who like to control what people can and can't see on their screens. If people don't like Ofcom's regulations they will be able to ignore them with impunity and if they find $ky too costly they will be able to seek out alternative content on the Internet.

Of course the Governmment does not like this idea one little bit so it's time for some tough new restrictions just to make sure we all know who's in charge and there's still some things that they can regulate people with.
