I wouldn't say that. Ik think they rather see him as an example, a
teacher, a guide, etc. But Buddha was not a god. It is therefore not
much use praying to buddha and his guidelines for a good life have no
divine source.

In fact, a well known saying is that if you meet buddha on the road, you
better kill him (thinking of buddha as something outside yourself is
dualistic thinking).

So, although many buddhist will kneel or bow before buddha, I'd don't
think one should see that as revering some godlike invisible friend or
something like that.
