What the "whiparound" is (if I'm the one organising it)
SnowdropExplodes, 23 Oct 2005 14:33:35
The responses have been interesting o far, but I think
it is best to be clear what I had in mind for the
"Backlash Whiparound".
An evening that could take the form of a cabaret or
talent contest, with several acts taking it in turns,
and hopefully a recognisable name as the "headliners"
doing a turn themselves.
I'm going to ask on IC for bands/soloists/performers,
looking to fill a minimum of 5 20 minute slots.
Because we don't know if there will even be any need
for a campaign after December 2nd (because that's the
end of the consultation, and we *may*, unlikely as it
seems, have won already on the consultation phase) I
was thinking that the best date to raise awareness,
and either to round of the successful campaign or else
to raise awareness for the next phase, has to be
December 2nd or 3rd - which as I've already noted,
coincides with a break in the Levellers' tour dates,
and *may* mean we could persuade them to do a 20
minute slot at the beginning or end of the evening.
I don't know how realistic that timescale is. If
people tell me that it's dumb, then maybe I can make
it a karaoke evening or something like that instead?
I don't yet have any idea how many people to assume
would be likely to attend, I'm guessing that London
Munch proportions would be about right, and maybe add
a generous few for any 'nillas who are interested
enough to turn up.
As explained, I see this as an awareness-raising
thing, which means that it would be very nice indeed
if it could be a 'nilla-friendly event. I would like
it to be something our PR group could use, and I would
appreciate guidance from them on how to make it
useful.
Someone has already offered to pay the costs of the
event on the basis of a very rough estimate of what
they might be (I could be way off with my guess).
I need somebody who lives in London and can arrange a
venue, sound system and catering. I will coordinate
with that person, and arrange artists and other
activities. I need sensible suggestions as to venue
size so that my London-based person can make sensible
arrangements.
Most of all I need performers.
If people can help, please contact me off-list.

So far as timing is concerned, 2 Dec is only the close of submissions to the
consultation. They have undertaken to publish the results of the
consultation within 3 months of that date, so until then it's unlikely we'll
know where it's going next.

*slaps forehead*
Of course.
Silly me.
Thanks for that little poke in the ribs :-)
Timescale no longer such a worry, but I'll still aim
for first weekend in December for now and change plans
if that can't be done (otherwise I'd be looking at
late Feb/early March to try to get the Levellers to do
the gig).

not wanting to rain on this idea but what is the aims of this event to raise funds or awareness?
before anyone offers suggestions for venues how many people do you expect?
if someone has offered to fund the event wouldn't that money be put to better use paying for the QC
surely the night will pay for its self??

Primarily to raise funds. I want it to be a suitable
event to raise the profile of the campaign if the PR
group think it's a good idea.

This is the first question that I am researching. I
have made my initial estimate as being the attendance
at a London Munch plus a generous percentage of that
number, but I don't know how many that comes to
because I don't know how many go to the London Munch.
If that number looks silly, then I will try to find a
more sensible way of estimating attendance.
It would be useful to know how many people were at the
public campaign meetings, as that might also be a
useful indicator.
I will have definite answers ASAP.

Yes, it should pay for itself. However, it may well
require an initial outlay, in the form of payment for
facilities or (if payment is expected afterwards) in
the form of a deposit.
I don't know what timescale there is on paying the QC,
I do know that my initial estimate of the cost of the
event is about half the cost of the QC (I don't know
how realistic my estimate is).
*****
I intend to have a more detailed set of figures and a
better idea of how it will work, by the end of the
week.
