Organising "Backlash Whiparound"

SnowdropExplodes, 22 Oct 2005 22:08:54

Finally seen something I reckon I might be able to do.

And it's taken me this long to think it through that
far.

A week or two back someone suggested a fundraising
concert for Backlash and i thought "what a good idea"
but nobody seems to have done anything with it.

So I may as well offer to organise the 'artists and
repertoire" side of it at least. if someone else
will volunteer to organise a venue and hiring the
appropriate PA equipment, I'll sort out the people who
agree to do a turn for us.

I don't know how long it will take to organise that
side of things, but if we can make it the aim to have
the gig set up for the same week as the end of the
public consultation then we can boost publicity for
our cause as well.

Two possibilities:

1/. (easier to set up) A karaoke night.

2/. A talent night/concert of BDSMers and others.

If we go for option 2, then it occurs to me that we
might be able to gain support from one or two big-name
bands who are known to have been involved in political
action.

I have found (fairly easy to do) the contact details
for booking Chumbawamba - should I try contacting them
to find out whether they would be interested, and if
so, what it would cost?

Ta,

A "One Hit Wonder" pop group who scored a chart success with "Tub
Thumping" and most famous for chucking a bucket of water over John
Prescott at a music awards event when Labour were trying out its
laughable "Cool Britannia" rebranding exercise.

Cheers,
Graham.

I thought that was a cove curiously named after a Blackpool landlady's
idea of an English breakfast...

More importantly (in terms of the likelihood of them
helping us out), they have alligned themselves with
liberal campaigns both before and since. They were a
big part of the early "Reclaim the Streets" concerts
in Bradford (they were locally famous in Yorkshire
already), and they released an album entitled "English
Rebel Songs" which was made up of political folk music
since the 14th Century.

So they might conceivably be interested in supporting
us on the civil liberties/freedom of speech angle, and
are famous enough to attract attention.

I've looked at the Levellers' website as well now, and
they have contact details, and a week-long gap in
their tour schedule at the time of the December 2 end
of the consultation (between a gig in Koln and one at
Keele University, so they may be busy during that
time).

They might be way too tired and/or busy to pay
attention, but they are another famously political
band who might just be willing to turn up to do a
couple of songs and add a bit of media interest.

I'll work out what needs organising and get sorting it
out. Assuming it'll be in London, I will need
someone London-based who can do booking the venue and
other things that need to be done there.

Ta,

They are a band, they've been around for years and are quite political. I'm not a fan (never really listened to them), but I know several people who love them.

Cosmic could help with a venue.

you may want to talk to Justin Allen and connie Kaler who helped with thew KInkfest show....I think thunder may have mentioned it to them so don't want you working on the same thing separately.

I do have a suggestion.

would it be possible to stage a pastiche of stills from well-known films that could be outlawed under the proposals.

we could then do some sort of webcast.

did I explain myself, do we think its a good idea?

I know people that would help.

You KNOW I've mentioned it to Justin. You replied to his agreement.

Are you thinking of having the pastiche as a backdrop to something else?

Great. How do I contact them?

I'm not sure. It sounds like a very good idea, but I
am nervous of going too far to "ram it down their
throats" if we do get 'nillas attending who are more
interested in the music than the cause.

How much would it take to have such a thing set up,
and can we have it ready and decide whether or not to
use it at a later stage? If I don't get enough acts
to agree to do it, we may need something to fill the
time!
