the apparent discrepancy between those who realised their sexual identity before age 17 and those who awoke after age 40 may well be explained by examining individual case histories. In my experience the fantasies and sexual arousal through bdsm type activities may have been present but controlled by social conditioning until later life, when circumstances allowed the recognition and acceptance of what had always been a part of the respondant's sexual nature.
