Get me off this list!
Kinky Kev, 18 Oct 2005 18:29:00
Please unsubscribe me from your mailing list. I've tried the 'blank e-mail'
boll*cks but i'm becoming inundated with e-mails that appear to be more
about personal egos and error correcting than fighting the 'cause'.
All I wanted to find out was a suitable structure for a letter to my local
M.P. / Government and I didn't even get that.
Good luck with the cause.

I'm sure there are some examples of letters to MPs but I can't find them either. It's possible they haven't been put up yet.

Like Kevin I am finding the torrent of hair-splitting
( and off-topic ) messages a little "too much".
Please people let`s just keep this focused.
We have an important cause, but limited time.
Sincerely,
Stuart.

Sadly Kev et al such is the nature of 'unstructured groups'- without clear boundaries and leadership the chaos level and 'signal to noise ratio' tends to swing wildly leaving many dissatisfied.
The autonomous collective style is famously task innefficient - however the alternative usually results in the "Who died and made you Emperor?" style of squabble.
The lesson of history is that successful campaigns (be they military or civil) have always had strong identifiable leaders. In the case of this campaign there is a reluctance of individuals to go there for many very sound reasons - the main one being that no one wants either the responsibility nor accountability for it.
A structured and 'led' organisation is like a well ordered supermarket with things clearly labelled and put in neat rows so the 'goods' are easy to find. The downside is that there are rules and regulations and it needs a lot of 'staff' to keep it running.
An unstructured 'loose' organisation like Backlash is more akin to a car boot sale. One person opens the gate to the field and folk set up their stalls all over the place which means you have to hunt for hours before possibly finding what you seek.
The limited amount of time available before submission date means that the usual 'group' process of Forming Storming Norming Performing is just simply not available to us. Circumstances are forcing us to move straight from Forming to Performing without the two crucial middle stages. If I were part of the 'other side' I would be watching gleefully in the knowledge that the time limit I had imposed had put opponants to my proposals in this difficult position which would reduce their effectiveness.
All I advise people to do when they feel frustrated - as you obviously are Kev - is to take a deep breath - count to ten and remember - the other side want you to react in this way. They are counting on a degree of 'squabble' to create frustration in our ranks thereby weakening our 'side'. These people are ace social manipulators - don't fall for their ploy.
Finally - the spurious email question. Go into the Backlash Smart Group - left hand yellow menu bar - put cursor on Group you will see a pop up menu - forth sub heading down click on Your Settings.
************
Your Group Settings
Use this area to view and change your settings within this Group.
The 'message receive method' determines how you receive email messages from the Group - you can choose from immediate mail delivery, or to receive a digest of mails sent to the Group (this is useful for very active Groups). You can also choose to read Group mail only via the web.
***********
Simply set your email delivery to No Email - Web Retrival Only.
Kind regards
Laurence

There is a lot of activity on this group because there are a
reasonably large number of people trying to tackle a complex problem
in a relatively unstructured way.
Staying on topic and maintaining focus is a fine sentiment but it's
impossible to define how you'd enforce this in practice. Some people
are doing immediately valuable work. Others are exploring the wider
issues in more depth to be able to understand them well enough to
write or campaign on the subject beyond this particular consultation
phase. If the "wider issues" threads - or any others - don't interest
you, just ignore them.
Where necessary, some people are forming sub-groups with separate lists.
Aside from what has already been mentioned about turning off mails or
batching them as a digest, you will find an email program that groups
messages together by thread will make things easier to manage.
For POP3 mail, try Thunderbird:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/
For webmail, I can send a Googlemail invitation to anyone that
requests one. Just email me directly to ask.
I'd be drowning in this if it wasn't for Googlemail's excellent
threading and archiving features. If you haven't tried it, you almost
certainly don't know what you're missing.

Hi have you managed to get your name off the list?
If so would you care to share the secret with me?
These e-mails are driving me mad, clogging up my inbox
and making me realise what a flock of headless
chickens look like!
Take care and hope you can help me.

You're clearly sympathetic to the aims of the campaign. Did you
consider contributing your superior organisational skills to the
group, or did you think us to be beyond redemption?
