Things we should hold dear.

Dear Members,
I believe for a campaign like ours to be affective it requires it to be robust vibrant and very assertive. We need to show graphically and demonstrate rigorously how silly and unjust this proposed law is.
Moreover, it should be demonstrated to MPs and quaking do-gooders that the bill will seek to achieve nothing other than to be a costly piece of legislation that will be unworkable in law.
In some ways I personally I hope the bill goes forward because with the right campaign it will show the concern of the ordinary individual in the street about the insidious erosion of freedom of speech and action.
Many of our fathers fought WW2 for the freedom of speech for our citizens. Once upon a time it was the very platform this country stood for and held dear. Now as far as I am aware one no can any longer stand in ‘Hide Corner’ and say what they wish. There isn’t even that tiny corner of land in London where we can say entirely without prejudice what is on own mind.
We are not going to win this campaign entirely with intellectual argument, convoluted words, and pointing out anomalies in the law. We each of us need to stand up be visible and be counted.
The government need to realise they are opening a huge can of worms and I believe if they think the opposition strong enough the proposed bill will be dropped. After all there are plenty more important things for the government to be getting on with, and I personally don’t think there is the depth of feeling for a big fight over this planned legislature.
However, if a fight is required to return to the values we have held dear for centuries, then let it be, ‘Trafalgar Square’ here we come. Alas please let’s not proceed through rudeness or aggression between ourselves.
Let’s stay focused.

Your point is well made. More so, perhaps, because of your reference to
Speakers Corner, in Hyde Park. It does still exist, and will continue to do
so unless The Royal Parks and Gardens Regulation Act 1872 is repealed!

Its history following a fight for freedom of speech is an interesting
parallel to the fight we have on our hands now.
