Regarding libel, I recommend speaking to a lawyer if you're really
worried. I hear Rabinder Singh is good, and a bargain to boot.
_My_ understanding is that Smartgroups would not be liable for libel
as they are effectively acting as a hosting company, not a publisher.
It's also my understanding that if you want to make yourself liable
for the content here, the best way to do it is to set yourself up as a
"moderator". Legally, this probably translates to "publisher" - you
would be expected to view and approve things before they hit the
public web.
If you _don't_ want to be in that position, simply take the point of
view that posters are responsible for what they write. If Smartgroups
or you get a request from anyone to remove something inappropriate,
that can be examined on a case-by-case basis.
I don't actually know which posts are worrying you. If it's the ones
about the possible commercial/professional interests of some of the
JLT people, I'd say that was quite legitimate speech. Not only is it
evidently true but it's not something that is frowned upon in society.
JLT people are quite welcome to lobby for laws that will enhance their
professional standing and make them a ton of cash. Not only is it
legal and socially acceptable, it's a highly respected way to get on
in the world. We are within our rights to make that assessment of the
situation collectively if it's deemed appropriate, and to do so
individually whether the group as a whole agrees with it or not.
Please go and ask a lawyer what libel is because I can't be bothered
to explain it any further.
I will however let you know what censorship is. It's inhibiting
others' speech - ostenisbly for their benefit but actually for your
own.
